Art is not radioactive, and people aren’t contaminated by mere exposure to culture. It is therefore a mistake to believe that solely the number of visitors to an exhibition can ever be a measure of its quality. In fact, the opposite is often true, as large numbers can reduce the possibility of the works being appreciated and reduce their very real power to transform the visitor who is prepared to engage with the object for significant periods of time. The longer we want people to spend with the works, the lower the capacity of the exhibition – it cannot be otherwise.
