Learning outside the school setting is self-initiated, self-directed and self-sustaining. At its best, informal learning creates ‘flow’ experiences, where the person is unaware of her surroundings and loses track of time. Informal learning is intrinsically motivated, and not subject to any restrictions – as Frank Oppenheimer always said: ‘nobody ever failed a museum’. The museum is a privileged site for informal learning, done for its own intrinsic pleasure.
