Gardening.

The measure of successful management is not imposing change, but in nurturing and sustaining growth. The metaphor of institution as machine – in which worn out and inefficient parts are exchanged for new and better ones – is better replaced by the metaphor of institution as garden. In a garden, it isn’t that the rose is inefficient, lazy or unproductive – it may just have been planted in the wrong place. Rather than replacing it with a more efficient cactus, a move to the shade allows the rose – and the garden to flourish. This resonates neatly with Reggio Emilia’s belief that ‘the aim of teaching is not to produce learning but to produce the conditions for learning’ – in the museum we aim to create the conditions for learning, for staff and visitors alike.
