Culture.

Philippe Daverio writes ‘culture is not just a sound bite – it is everyday practice.’ The museum is not in the entertainment business, it is not a part of the ‘leisure industry’, it does not provide ‘edu-tainment’ – it makes culture, and is an institution of informal learning. The museum supports its users to become more aware of humankind’s cultural legacy, based on the values of creativity, invention and contemplation, and their becoming more active participants in the world in which they live. In a museum people can experience that, in Jonathan Miller’s words, ‘the life of the mind is a pleasure.’ This is not elitist or exclusive, but part of our common humanity – access to culture and learning is a fundamental need and a human right.
